 Dear guests, teachers and students,

My name is Melanie Vičević and I'm a junior at Hrvatski kralj Zvonimir secondary school. I'll try to show you what it is like to be a student there and I'll do my best to present our school, some of our successful projects and activities.

Hrvatski kralj Zvonimir secondary school is a relatively small school with around 400 students, located in the town of Krk on the island of the same name. Our school offers a range of courses, from 3-year catering and engineering courses to 4-year vocational schools of economics , tourism and the general 4-year grammar school.

Even though we are on an island, we are not islands unto ourselves as John Donne had noted. Through a wide range of projects we have connected  with Europe and the world.

Tolerance, diversity, human rights, conservation of environment, our cultural-historical heritage and international cooperation are values that are promoted, taught and encouraged, helping us to become responsible, successful and open-minded members of society.

REPRESENTING CROATIA IN BRUSSELS AND STRASBOURG

And now, a few words about how we represented Croatia in Brussels and Strasbourg.

Students at my school have shown their dedication to creating a better and more tolerant Europe through their involvement in various projects, one of the most notable being YOUR EUROPE, YOUR SAY 2016. In March 2016, our students were Croatian representatives  and together with other 17 year-olds from all over Europe discussed the issue of migration and integrating refugees in host countries, an event organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) . I was honoured to be a member of the Croatian team in Brussels, an experience I will never forget.

Our senior students took part in a competition called My Ideas For a Better Europe, organised by the European Parliament Information Office. For two years in a row, in 2015 and 2016, our students' videos were awarded with a class trip to Strasbourg and participation in the Euroscola programme, a simulation of the work of European MPs in Strasbourg. Our students represented Croatia and together with other students from all over the European Union discussed aspects of European integration and other challenges the EU is facing.

At the beginning of May this year, one of our students was invited to London  to take part in the Youth Parliament held at Docklands Academy. Having carried out research on the topic which was “The impact of immigration on the travel and tourism industry in Europe“, students played the role of members of the European Parliament and discussed various solutions and ideas. The aim was to promote greater global awareness of contemporary issues in travel and tourism and to develop the skills of effective international communication.

We are also engaged in INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS and E-TWINNING PROJECTS

Hrvatski kralj Zvonimir secondary school received the prestigious COMET award for the best eTwinning project in the 2015/2016 academic year. It was a joint project of students from Portugal, Poland and our school, called “Tourism and Social Entrepreneurship“. As tourism is the main source of income on the island and our school contributes by providing education for the tourism and catering industry, we encouraged students to explore the island's cultural heritage, its landmarks, historical monuments, sights and gastronomy in order to develop social entrepreneurship in the field of tourism. The project was also awarded the National and European Quality Label, recognition to teachers and schools for the high quality of eTwinning activities. Let me add, that just a few days ago, one of our junior students was nominated an eTwinning ambassador, the first in Croatia. Her mission is to help and guide students from all over Europe to engage in joint projects.

In 2014 five of our students also took part in another EU event called Juvenes Translatores, an annual translation contest organised by the European Commission. If Europeans are to be 'united in diversity', as the EU’s own motto puts it, we need to be able to understand languages other than our own. With the belief that learning languages  brings us closer and helps us understand each other’s cultures, 8 students chose to improve their language skills  and took part in a translation workshop in Zagreb at the  European Commission Representation in 2015.

Under the Erasmus+ mobility programme K1, projects  have been approved for the academic year 2016. Our students in the catering and tourism field will have the opportunity to do their practical training in Portugal, while our teachers will attend various training courses abroad. These projects have been approved by the Agency for Mobility and EU programmes and are financed by the European Union.

The experience and skills that students and teachers will acquire through these programmes is invaluable. Students will be able to put their theoretical knowledge to practice, but also improve their language and communication skills. Our students and teachers are encouraged to follow innovations and modern trends in education and to disseminate/share the knowledge  they have acquired.

However, we have not forgotten who we are and where we come from. FOSTERING AND PROMOTING THE ISLAND'S HERITAGE has always been important to us.

Hrvatski kralj Zvonimir  secondary school has always been devoted to preserving the island's traditional values and promoting its cultural and historical heritage by engaging students  in various projects and activities related to our intangible and immovable cultural heritage, thus raising students' awareness of the island's  rich history.

Having these values in mind, as well as the 95th anniversary of our school which will be celebrated  throughout the coming academic year, we had our students and teachers working together on a project related to the beginnings of Croatian literacy and culture. The project is called AZ BUKY VEJA GLAGOLJI  and promotes a creative approach to studying and presenting glagolitic inscriptions found on the island of Krk. By preserving and comprehending our specific cultural identity, students learn to appeciate other cultures and value diversity.

Thanks you for your attention and now let's have a look at what our students have  prepared for you. I hope you enjoy it!

Projekt će osigurati učenicima hotelijersko-turističkog programa stručnu praksu u Portugalu s ciljem usvajanja novih, suvremenih, multidisciplinarnih i primjenjivih znanja i vještina u području turizma i hotelijerstva.

Danas, kada živimo u svijetu sveopće globalizacije, skrb o dobrima kulturne i prirodne baštine predstavlja prioritet, ali i uvjet opstanka i kvalitete života sadašnjih i budućih generacija.

Dora Blažević (1.G), Laura Jurina (1.G), Erik Kamenar (1.G), Valerija Pereković (1.G), Nikica Stijepić (1.G), Petra Turčić (1.G), Ana Karabaić (1.G), Luka Vadnov (1.G), Miriam Volarić (1.G), Lucija Avsec (1.G), Katarina Valković (1.G), Leonarda Lisjak(2.G),Kristina Manzoni (2.G), Barbara Toljanić (2.G), Tereza Toljanić (2.G), Stjepan Toljanić ( 2.HTT), Ana Šimonji (2.HTT), Marija Blažević (3.G), Ana Toljanić (3.G), Melani Vičević (3.G), Dinka Brusić (4.HTT)
